Inlay-Onlay

Porcelain fillings (Porcelain inlay or Onlay) are superior aesthetic and durable fillings prepared in a laboratory. They are much more compatible with the tooth they are applied to and neighboring teeth than composite (white) fillings.

This is due to the fact that the filling is prepared outside the mouth in a laboratory environment. After the broken, decayed or old filled part of the tooth is removed, the remaining healthy part is measured and sent to the laboratory. In a laboratory environment, a model prepared with a sensitive technology is taken to a special IPS machine to obtain fillings with perfect aesthetics and function. Especially in teeth with large material loss, root canal treatment is first applied and if necessary, simple surgical corrections are made in the gum (gingivoplasty - gingival manicuring) and onlay (porcelain or composite filling prepared in the laboratory) is made on it. In this way, the risk of the tooth or filling breaking is quite low.

Inlays are similar to known fillings. They are used when the tissue loss on the chewing surface of the tooth is not very extensive and the tooth is "cusp" It is applied in cases where the protruding parts we call are not damaged by cavities or fractures.

In onlays; the tissue loss in the part of the tooth that is visible in the mouth is wider. At least one or more protruding parts are damaged.

Porcelain Inlays Are Preferred Instead of Amalgam Fillings

  • They are tissue-friendly fillings, materials with the highest biological compatibility. They are produced with advanced technology. Porcelains that are prepared and finished until the next rehearsal are first checked and adapted in the mouth and then placed in a strong In order to be bonded to the teeth in a way, porcelain fillings are bonded to the teeth with a type of fluid composite filling material called Adhesive Cementation, and in this way, the remaining tooth tissues are strengthened.
  • After the bonding process, the process is completed by polishing and polishing.
  • With a normal filling, approximately 50% of the lost tooth tissue can be filled and restored. Normal fillings cannot be applied to teeth that have lost more substance. However, teeth that have lost up to 75% of substance can be restored with porcelain fillings, and the remaining tooth tissue is also protected.
  • In the porcelain filling method, the healthy tooth tissue in the mouth is not touched. With a few changes made to the tooth cavity opened in a normal filling, the tooth can be made ready for porcelain filling.

HOW IS IT APPLIED?

  • They usually take 2 sessions, each session takes between 60-90 minutes. In the first visit, damaged tissues such as cavities etc. on the tooth are cleaned and preparations are made for the porcelain filling that will sit on the healthy tooth tissue.
  • After the tooth preparations are completed, the work we have done with the precise measurements taken from the teeth is sent to the laboratory and temporary fillings are placed so that the teeth remain empty and do not cause sensitivity until the next appointment. It is taken with a delicate polyether material.
  • The tooth tissue that has lost material allows the restorative process that cannot be done with a porcelain filling to be carried out in a healthy way.
  • We expect a tooth restored in this way to be used without problems for 8 to 15 years. Sometimes, as in the case photos above, even when there is not enough tooth volume to make a crown coating, porcelain filling can be an alternative for us.

THINGS TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT

  • Avoid chewing very hard foods
  • Normal oral care; you must continue brushing your teeth, flossing and using a fluoride mouthwash.
  • Avoid coloring foods and liquids for 48 hours after bonding to avoid discoloration
  • Use with caution and go to your doctor for check-ups

In the past, Dental Gold was used in inlay and onlay production, considering its resistance to chewing forces. Today, Porcelain inlay/onlays are preferred with the development of special cast and durable porcelains. Because These Porcelains both withstand the forces of chewing and provide perfect aesthetic harmony with the natural tooth.

Advantages

  • Repairs are not possible
  • If they are made of composite, they change color over time
  • Adhesion processes require special sensitivity and experience
