Apical Resection

Apical resection is the surgical opening of abscesses and cystic lesions that occur at the root tip of the tooth within the bone, cutting and removing the infected root area there, and completing the root canal treatment.

Apical resection is a treatment option that should be considered before tooth extraction. When an infected area is seen at the root tip, the first procedure to be performed is root canal treatment. However, sometimes root canal treatment alone is not sufficient to eliminate this inflammation and the patient's complaints continue. In such a situation, the damaged tissue and root tip must be surgically removed. Recurrence (recurrence) may occur depending on the size of the infection or cyst.

Bone grafting can also be performed to compensate for bone loss that occurs during the operation. Since apicoectomy is a surgical procedure, a postoperative recovery period will be required. Surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. Many patients prefer only local anesthesia. This decision is best made by the patient and the physician in consultation.

Indications

  • Incomplete root canal treatment due to structural or formal deformity of the tooth root,
  • Inability to perform root canal treatment due to the presence of a restoration on the tooth that cannot be removed,
  • If the instrument is broken during root canal treatment, if the broken instrument must be removed, in order to remove the instrument,
  • In cases where the patient's pain continues despite the root canal treatment,
  • In cases where a cyst forms on the tooth root,
  • In cases where the 1/3 end of the tooth root inside the bone is broken.
